Occupying a fairly central position in England and Wales, Derby has held a significant position in terms of transport across the country. By the 1840s the strategic importance of Derby to the railway system was apparent.

The Geography of Derby
Derby City is in the south east corner of the county of Derbyshire, in Trent valley. Along with Nottingham and Leicester it makes up the sub-region of the East Midlands, Derby is the smallest of these three cities.

Derby sporting teams and recreation
The two most famous sporting teams associated with Derby are its Premiership football team and its first class cricket club. The nearby Peak District provides plenty of opportunities for a variety of outdoor sports and recreational activities.
